It is one of the French Riviera's most quoted selling points: you can ski in the morning and have lunch by the sea. It is true, and the Alpes-Maritimes has three resorts within two hours of the airport. But the road is very much a mountain road, with everything that implies. Here is what to know before booking a transfer.
Three resorts, three different valleys
This is the first thing to understand, and the one that causes the most booking errors: the three resorts are not reached by the same road.
- Isola 2000 lies at the head of the Tinée valley, at 2,000 metres. Allow 93 km and about 1 hr 30 from Nice Airport. It is the closest ski resort to an international airport in Europe.
- Auron is also in the Tinée valley, but higher, above Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée: 100 km and about 1 hr 45.
- Valberg is reached through another valley, the Var, then the Cians gorges: 93 km and about 1 hr 40.
A counter-intuitive consequence: Auron and Valberg are close as the crow flies but an hour of driving apart, because you have to come back down one valley and climb the other. Always specify the resort when you book.
What the road really involves
The journey starts at sea level and climbs to 2,000 metres. That sentence sums up the essentials.
Mandatory equipment
In the Alpes-Maritimes, regulations require winter equipment on mountain roads for much of the season. Our vehicles that go up to the resorts run compliant winter tyres, and we do not set off without them. This is not an option.
The road surface
Over the final kilometres, particularly around dawn and dusk, ice is common. That does not stop you driving, it means driving slowly. A journey quoted at 1 hr 30 can become 1 hr 50 in difficult conditions, and that is normal.
Closures
After heavy snowfall, the road may close or access may be restricted for several hours. We follow the road bulletins and warn you as soon as we know, with the revised time. A journey that cannot be made is not charged.
The real issue: luggage volume
This is the point travellers underestimate most, and the one that decides the vehicle.
A skier travels with a ski bag or a snowboard bag, a boot bag, a helmet, and a suitcase of warm — therefore bulky — clothing. Multiply that by four people and you see why a saloon car will not do.
In practice:
- Saloon: two skiers at most with their equipment, or four passengers without ski gear.
- Seven-seat van: a full group with bags, boots and a week's luggage.
Tell us the number of pairs of skis or snowboards when you book. It is logistics, not paperwork.
What it costs
Our rate is per kilometre, at €1.80 in a saloon car, quoted before departure and firm. On these journeys that gives:
- Nice Airport → Isola 2000: 93 km, or €167
- Nice Airport → Auron: 100 km, or €180
- Nice Airport → Valberg: 93 km, or €167
Those amounts cover being met in the arrivals hall, flight tracking, waiting time if you are late, luggage and tolls. There is no surcharge for a departure before dawn or a return at night, which matters on this kind of journey where the hours are often extreme.
For a van the rate differs and is given with your quote. At four or six people, the cost per head falls well below a shared shuttle, with a departure at the time you choose.
Timing: Saturdays and dawn
Two constraints shape the season.
Changeover Saturdays. Arrivals and departures concentrate on the same day, and the Tinée road is single-carriageway over much of its length. Allow time, and book early: it is the day availability goes fastest.
Pre-dawn departures. For a morning flight from Auron you have to leave before dawn: nearly two hours of driving in normal conditions, more if the road is snowy, plus the check-in margin. A pick-up at four in the morning is routine and costs no more.
A day's skiing from the coast
It is possible, and it is a recurring request. Leave Nice around six, reach Isola around half past seven, ski, return in the late afternoon.
For that, hourly hire suits better than two transfers: the car stays on site, your things stay in the boot, and you decide the return time according to the weather and how tired you are. The driver waits for you at the foot of the slopes.
Summer too
All three resorts stay active outside the ski season, for hiking, mountain biking and the Mercantour National Park. Journey times are shorter, with no equipment constraint, and the pass roads — the Lombarde into Italy, the Cians gorges — become remarkable drives in their own right.
Bikes can be carried in the van, on request when booking.
In short
Skiing in the morning and lunch by the sea is not a marketing line: it is real. But it assumes a properly equipped vehicle, a driver who knows the valleys, and an honest rather than optimistic estimate of the journey time.
